We have started the Generations Meeting project in order to analyze our cultural values from our past and the beauties of the environment we live in. As the Erciyes College family, we have visited the "Doner Cupola", one of the valuable cultural and historical assets of our Kayseri, on behalf of this project.
The tomb, located on the Kayseri Talas road, is in the park built by the Metropolitan Municipality and was unearthed by the cleaning of the surrounding structures. This tomb, which is one of the most beautiful examples of Seljuk works in Kayseri, was built in 1276-1279 in the name of Princess Shah Cihan Hatun.
The reason why this cupola is called Döner Kümbet is due to the polygonal nature of the work. The cupola has a dodecagonal body on a square base and is covered with a conical roof. It is made of yellowish cut stone in the region.
There is a square shaped mummy under the cupola. The twelve corners of the body are divided into round arched sections and the top of each section is embossed with geometric shapes and griffins.
The entrance door of the cupola has a low arch. There are small alcoves on both sides of the entrance. These cavities are in the form of half domes with muqarnas. There are two windows on the east and west walls of the main structure of the cupola and a niche for the south.
The niche of the mihrab is polygonal, with half-round colonnades on both corners. In addition, the mihrab is enclosed in a geometric molding frame. The inner part of the dome is made of stone.
