STORY

The invention of gunpowder used in firearms dates back to the 800s. Its composition is saltpeter, charcoal and sulfur. Throughout history, experiments have been conducted on the quantities and types of these substances and the way has been taken to produce the highest quality gunpowder. The places where gunpowder was manufactured were called “Gunpowder Factory” during the Ottoman period. The first construction of gunpowder factories in the Ottoman period goes back to the 15th century. At the same time, the idea of putting gunpowder in a chamber and transporting it accelerated the construction of gunpowder containers. Various construction materials such as leather, mineral, bone, wood have been used in the construction of gunpowder containers with forms such as horn, gourd, scabbard tip. Each of the gunpowder holders that have been used throughout history has taken its place in museums and collections as a work of art. One of the examples of gunpowder used during the Ottoman period is also in the collection of our museum.
