When Abdulhamid II took the throne (1293/1876), he cut five different values of gold coins in Istanbul of 500, 250, 100, 50, 25 kurus. Gold coins are an indicator of the economic power of the state, but the coins minted from silver, bronze and copper mines were more suitable for use in daily trade. Therefore, after each sultan ascended the throne, he cut gold coins, which were the symbol of his power and reign, as well as coins from silver and other mines to enter circulation in his own name.
In addition, these coins were not used only in trade or as a collection. At the same time, women used to make ornaments from these coins or use them as jewelry, such as earrings, bracelets, necklaces or they would decorate their clothes. There is also a handle on this coin in our museum. Therefore, it is estimated that this coin was once used as an earring.
