“ضرب فی قسطنطنیه”, “Duribe fi Kostantiniyye’’, “28”, year “1223” were written in Ottoman Turkish on the coin from Mahmud II period. This is the year in which the sultan ascended the throne. On the back of the coin, the Sultan’s signature and the expression “Juridical’’, which is his nickname were written. The Sultan’s signature has six points. The hole on it is located in the original.
STORY
His 31 years on the throne are one of the most politically depressed periods in Ottoman history. ve asi ilan ettiği Mısır Valisi Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Paşa'nın ordularının Suriye ve Anadolu'yu geçerek Kütahya'ya kadar gelmeleri gibi olaylarla karşı karşıya kalan Sultan Mahmud II, who faced the events such as the Serbian and Greek riots, which started the process of disintegration of the empire in the Balkans, Russian, British and French fleets’ destroying the Ottoman fleet in Navarin and the armies of Kavalali Mehmet Ali Pasha, the governor of Egypt whom he declared as the rebel, coming to Kutahya by passing Syria and Anatolia, on the other hand, with the reforms he carried out, he changed the face of the empire and laid the foundations of Ottoman modernization and he was the preparer of the way to the Imperial Edict of Reorganization, which was announced four months after his death. The coin we have was minted in Konstantiniyye(Istanbul) with a value of Cedid 10 coins in the year of Sultan Mahmud II accession to the throne.
